Flying & tinnitus

Welcome aboard! Flying with tinnitus can be challenging, but there are strategies you can employ to make the experience more comfortable.

Our top tips for a pleasant flight.

It is recommended to avoid using earplugs while flying, as they can make your tinnitus worse by blocking out background noise.

To have a more comfortable flight, try sitting towards the front of the plane where engine noise is usually quieter, especially if you’re in front of the wings.

To relieve pressure in your ears, remember to swallow or yawn frequently to equalize air pressure. This helps open the Eustachian tube and allows air to enter the middle ear for better balance.

Chewing gum or sucking on candies can also help with swallowing and managing pressure during takeoff and landing.

Staying awake during descent is best because it’s harder for your ears to adjust to changes in pressure while you’re asleep.

Consider using a nasal decongestant to keep airways clear and aid in pressure release, even if not currently experiencing congestion.

Keep your hearing aids in place during the flight, as they may offer assistance and comfort.

Take advantage of the onboard entertainment options such as music or movies to divert your attention from tinnitus and promote relaxation.

Minimising stress and anxiety is beneficial in managing tinnitus symptoms effectively during air travel.

If you have a cold or respiratory infection, it’s better not to fly as this can affect how well your Eustachian tube works.
